A patient asks ChatGPT for a dentist near them and gets three names back. Whether your clinic is one of them is your AI search visibility.
Most clinics can’t tell because a rank report only shows where you sit on Google’s results page. It says nothing about whether an AI answer names you.
That gap is growing. In BrightLocal’s 2026 survey of 1,002 US consumers, 45% used ChatGPT or similar tools for local recommendations. A year earlier, it was 6%. Australian data is thinner.
Still, a June 2024 national survey found almost one in 10 adults had asked ChatGPT a health question in the past six months.
This guide covers how each platform finds clinics, a checklist to work through, and how to check your progress.
How ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews Find Dentists
Each platform builds its answers a little differently, so it helps to know what feeds them.
Google AI Overviews
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on Google’s own search index. Google’s guide for site owners says a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, with no extra technical requirements.
It also lists an up-to-date Business Profile among the basics worth keeping in order.
ChatGPT
OpenAI uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot to surface websites in ChatGPT search. OpenAI says sites that opt out of it won’t appear in ChatGPT search answers. BrightLocal’s August 2026 study of local AI citations found ChatGPT leaned most on Yelp, so your listings outside Google matter too.
Perplexity
Perplexity’s crawler, PerplexityBot, does the same job. Perplexity recommends allowing it in your robots.txt file if you want to appear in its results.
AI tools work from what they can read, so make your site, profile, and listings easy to read.

Do Dentists Need Generative Engine Optimisation?
You may see agencies sell generative engine optimisation, or GEO, as a separate service. Google’s guide to generative AI search, updated in July 2026, says that from its side this is still SEO.
It also lists tactics you can ignore for Google, including llms.txt files, chopping content into tiny chunks, chasing inauthentic mentions, and overfocusing on structured data.
Worth knowing: Google adds that no third-party tool can see its internal ranking or AI systems, so treat any tool that claims otherwise with care.
That is Google’s view of Google. ChatGPT and Perplexity run their own systems, and no one outside them can promise how they choose. What Google’s advice does show is where to start because good AI SEO for dentists begins with the same dental SEO fundamentals as ever.
The AI Search Visibility Checklist for Dentists
Work through these in order. The first three are quick checks, and the rest build on them.
- Let the crawlers in. Check that your robots.txt file, security plugin, and hosting don’t block Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot, or PerplexityBot. Google says to make sure crawling is allowed by any CDN or hosting setup, not only in robots.txt.
- Tidy your Google Business Profile. Confirm your name, address, phone number, hours, categories, and services are current. BrightLocal found that Google Business Profile was the top source cited by Google’s AI features. Our guide to Business Profile features shows what to review.
- Match your details everywhere. Compare your website, Apple Maps, Facebook, and main directory listings. A listing with an old address or phone number can end up repeated in an AI answer.
- Answer patient questions up front. Lead each service page with a plain answer, then add detail. Google says unique, helpful content will likely matter more than any other tip in its guide. So say what only your clinic can: who treats, what a first visit involves, and how to book.
- Show who is behind the advice. Add practitioner bios, registration details, and clinic photos, so both patients and AI tools can see real people with real experience.
- Keep reviews coming, within AHPRA rules. In BrightLocal’s survey, 47% of consumers wouldn’t use a business with fewer than 20 reviews. And 74% only cared about reviews from the last three months. Ask every patient, but don’t republish reviews that describe treatment. AHPRA says advertising can’t use testimonials about clinical aspects, and replying to reviews on third-party sites may count as using one.

Once those are done, the next question is whether any of it is working.
How to Check Your AI Search Visibility
A rank tracker won’t show your AI search visibility, so start by asking the questions your patients ask.
- Ask the platforms. Put “emergency dentist in [suburb]” or “who does dental implants near me?” into ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google. Note whether your clinic is named, cited, or missing, and who appears instead. Answers vary, so repeat the check each month.
- Open Search Console. Google’s Generative AI performance report shows how your pages appear in its AI features.
- Track bookings. Watch calls, form fills, and appointments next to visits, because an AI answer can name you without sending a click.

Frequently Asked Questions
How Do I Get My Dental Practice to Appear in ChatGPT?
Start by letting OAI-SearchBot crawl your site, then keep your website, Google Business Profile, and listings accurate and consistent. No switch guarantees a mention because answers vary by question and user. Clear service pages, real practitioner details, and steady reviews give ChatGPT better material to draw on.
Is Answer Engine Optimisation Different From SEO?
Mostly no. Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is a label for earning more use in AI answers. For its own search, Google says this is still SEO. The core work stays the same: crawlable pages, accurate business details, and helpful content. Other platforms use their own systems, so check each one.
Should I Block AI Crawlers on My Dental Website?
Not if you want to appear in AI answers. OpenAI says sites that opt out of its search crawler won’t appear in ChatGPT search answers. Perplexity recommends allowing its crawler too. OpenAI treats GPTBot, its training crawler, separately. Ask your web developer before you change robots.txt.
Can I Republish Patient Reviews to Improve AI Search Visibility?
Not if they describe clinical care. AHPRA says advertising can’t use testimonials about clinical aspects of a service, and your website and business social pages count as advertising. You don’t have to remove reviews on platforms you don’t control, but take care before replying to them.
How Long Does AI Search Visibility Take to Build?
There is no fixed timeline, and no one can guarantee a mention. It depends on your starting point, local competition, and how consistently you keep your details and content current. Check monthly, and track calls and bookings as well as mentions.
