AI Overviews for Dentists: Is Your Practice Showing Up in Google’s AI Answers?

AI Overviews for dentists are now part of everyday patient search, yet most owners have never checked whether their own practice appears in one.

Your dental SEO report won’t tell you either. It shows where your pages rank, not whether Google’s AI answer links to them.

Until recently, there wasn’t a clean way to check. Since 31 August 2026, Google has offered a generative AI performance report in Search Console to all sites.

This guide shows you how to check AI Overviews for dentists in one sitting, what the results mean and what to fix first.

What AI Overviews for Dentists Actually Link To

Google runs two AI features that matter here. AI Overviews sit above the usual results and summarise an answer with links. Google AI Mode is a separate tab for longer, conversational questions, and it began rolling out in Australia on 8 October 2025.

Both features run several related searches behind the scenes, which Google calls query fan-out. So one patient question can surface a wider mix of links than a classic search.

To be one of those links, a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Google’s guidance says there are no extra requirements and no special markup. That makes AI search visibility a question of whether Google picks your page, and rankings feed into that choice without guaranteeing it.

How to Check If AI Overviews Include Your Practice

Start with the data Google now gives you, then confirm it with real searches.

  1. Open the generative AI performance report. It shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode, grouped by page, device and country.
  2. Check your site’s setting. Under Settings in Search Console, the Search generative AI control should include your site. If it excludes you, there are no impressions or traffic from these features.
  3. Search your top treatments on your phone. Use a private window and try implants, Invisalign, emergency care and check-ups. Note whether an AI answer appears and which sites it links.
  4. Try the local searches. Type “dentist near me” and your suburb version, then record who shows up. Results can change by location, so test from your suburb where possible.
  5. Repeat the test in Google AI Mode. Ask a longer question, such as which dentist in your suburb offers Saturday appointments.
  6. Log what you find. A simple sheet with the query, the date and the sites linked is enough to spot movement next month.

Worth knowing: no outside tool can see Google’s internal ranking data. Google’s guide to generative AI search warns against tools that claim otherwise, so check any paid AI tracker against Search Console.

What Your Results Are Telling You

After a few weeks of data, your results will usually fall into one of three patterns.

  • Impressions, few clicks. Your links are being shown, but patients get their answer on the results page. That’s zero-click search, so track calls and bookings alongside visits.
  • Good rankings, no AI impressions. The page may rank, yet not answer the patient’s question clearly enough to be linked. Compare it with the pages Google does link.
  • Competitors linked, you’re not. Open the pages earning those AI citations and see what they answer that yours skips. That gap becomes your content to-do list.

What to Fix First for Better AI Search Visibility

These fixes for AI Overviews for dentists follow Google’s own guidance, so none of them is guesswork. Start with the pages that bring in new patients.

  • Answer the patient’s question early. Put a plain answer in the first lines of each treatment page, then add the detail. Include what happens at your clinic, because Google says unique, experience-led content will likely matter more than any other tactic in its guide.
  • Keep your Google Business Profile accurate. Google says business profiles can help local businesses appear in AI responses, so check your hours, services and address. Our guide to hidden Google Business Profile features shows what else to complete.
  • Fix the technical basics. Confirm that robots.txt and your hosting don’t block Googlebot, and that no nosnippet tag sits on key pages. Keep services and opening hours as text, not images.
  • Check your page copy against AHPRA rules. AI answers are grounded in pages like yours, so the same advertising rules apply to every line. AHPRA’s testimonial guidance defines a testimonial as a positive statement about the clinical side of a service, used in advertising. Check it before copying patient reviews onto your site.

Hacks You Can Skip

You’ll see answer engine optimisation sold as a brand-new discipline. Google’s guide says that, from its side, optimising for generative AI search is still SEO.

That means you can ignore three popular tactics:

  • llms.txt files and special markup. Google Search doesn’t use them.
  • Splitting pages into tiny chunks. Google says there’s no requirement to do this.
  • Buying or faking mentions. Google says inauthentic mentions aren’t as helpful as they seem.

This guidance covers Google’s features only, so other AI tools may weigh sources differently.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I Need Special Markup to Appear in AI Overviews?

No. Google’s guidance says there are no extra technical requirements and no special schema to add. A page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Schema markup still helps with rich results, so it’s worth keeping, but it won’t guarantee an AI link.

Why Can’t I See the Generative AI Report in Search Console?

Most often, your site hasn’t had enough impressions in AI features yet. The report also won’t show if your site is excluded from them, so check the Search generative AI setting under Settings. Google rolled the report out to all sites on 31 August 2026.

Do AI Overviews for Dentists Show for “Dentist Near Me” Searches?

Sometimes. Google says AI Overviews only appear when they add value beyond classic results, so they often don’t trigger. Results also vary by query and location, so run “dentist near me” and your suburb search yourself and record what you see.

Should I Exclude My Site From Google’s AI Features?

It’s your choice, but weigh the cost. Excluding your site stops its links and content appearing in these features, so you get no impressions or traffic from them. Competitors’ content still appears, and the setting doesn’t affect other parts of Search.

Is AEO Different From Regular SEO?

For Google, no. Its guide treats optimising for generative AI search as SEO, so the foundations are the same. Other AI tools may weigh sources differently, and Google’s guidance doesn’t cover them. Ask any provider to explain what they would change on your site and why.
